Jackie Earle Haley to play villainous slaughterhouse tyrant Odin Quincannon in AMC’s television adaptation of cult comic series Preacher.

Oscar nominated actor Jackie Earle Haley has signed on to star in Preacher, the forthcoming television series based on the comic series of the same name, of which is scheduled to debut this summer on AMC.

Harley will play the villainous Odin Quincannon, who avid comic book readers will know all too well. His story arch in Preacher was quite possibly one of the most disturbing of all.

The owner of a slaughterhouse that had made him incredibly rich, Quincannon was widely regarded as the most powerful man in Salvation, Texas. Protected by his wealth and lawyer, Miss Oatlash, he was untouchable. That is, until Jesse Custer came into the scene. His story eventually comes to an end when Jesse finds him clutching – having already had sex with – a women made out of a variety of animal carcasses.

It is unknown as to how much of that will make it into the show itself. Though, according to The Hollywood Reporter, a number of changes should be expected. For a start, the location of his battle with Jesse will be moved to Annville County, Texas – rather than Salvation.

This isn’t Haley’s first foray into the world of comic book adaptions. He previously portrayed Rorschach in Watchmen (2009). His other credits include A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010), The Bad News Bears (1976), and Little Children (2006), for which he was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in 2007.

A co-production between Sony Pictures Television and AMC Studios, Preacher is based on the comic series created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon and originally published between 1995 and 2000 under DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint.

It follows the story of Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) a conflicted Preacher in a small Texas town who is inhabited by a mysterious entity that allows him to develop a highly unconventional power. Jesse, his ex-girlfriend, Tulip (Ruth Negga), and an Irish vampire named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) embark on a journey to, literally, find God.

The first trailer for the show was released back in November by the television network. Quite honestly, it blew me away. Despite my initial reservations about Dominic Cooper taking on the role of Jesse, I had set them all aside by the end. Similarly – and as I said at the time – Joseph Gilgun “embodies the role” of Cassidy “amazingly.”

Preacher is expected to debut this summer on AMC. We’re counting down the days – are you? Let us know in the comments below.
