Marvel's Black Panther, directed by Ryan Coogler, becomes the highest-grossing superhero film of all time. But how will this summer's Infinity War stack up?

Marvel‘s Black Panther has dethroned The Avengers to become the highest-grossing superhero movie of all time in the United States, adding yet another notch in its record-breaking streak of success. All hail T’Challa, the King of Wakanda.

The superhero flick, directed by Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station) and starring Chadwick Boseman (Get on Up) in the titular role, took in $16.6 million during its sixth weekend at the domestic box office, bringing its total up to $630.9 million.

Though Steven S. DeKnight’s Pacific Rim: Uprising was the true winner of the box office this weekend, opening to ticket receipts of $28 million, Black Panther continues to dominate the news. The additional revenue it’s raked in has cemented it as the fifth-highest grossing film of all time.

There’s little doubt about it: this is an enormous milestone for the standalone superhero pic – if a sequel wasn’t already in the bag, this would have secured it. It’s triumphed over Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War, both of which failed to compete against The Avengers. But what about this summer’s Infinity War? How will it perform in comparison? Time will tell.

It’ll be interesting to see how much more revenue Black Panther can pull in before its run at the box office comes to an end. In real terms, the flick is $22 million behind Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World ($652.2 million) and has the opportunity to shoot past James Cameron’s Titanic ($659.3 million).

However, with Stephen Spielberg’s Ready Player One opening on March 29 and A Quiet Place and Blockers set to open on April 6, both of which have been a hit at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival, Black Panther‘s domination at the box office might be about to take a turn.
