Television adaptation of Garth Ennis’ cult series Preacher set to premiere on AMC next week.

AMC has sent over a new trailer for its adaption of Ennis’ cult comic series Preacher, entitled “Welcome to Paradise”, ahead of its debut on May 22.

As a diehard fan of Preacher, I’m incredibly pumped for this. That won’t come as a surprise to many – I have commented as such on several occasions – and despite my initial reservations, they have mostly been set to rest at this point and its debut cannot come soon enough.

The show, a co-production between Sony Pictures Television and AMC Studios, is produced by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen (yes, the pair behind the upcoming R-rated ‘Sausage Party’) based on a script by Sam Catlin – of whom will act as showrunner. Goldberg will direct.

Based on the series by Garth Ennis, originally published from 1995 to 2000 under DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, Preacher follows Jesse Custer, a small down Texas preacher, who merges with a supernatural entity known as Genesis, that imbues him with the power of the ‘word’ (the ability to make people do anything he commands).

Teaming up with his gun-toting ex-girlfriend Tulip (Ruth Nagga), and an Irish vampire named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), Jesse (Dominic Cooper) sets off on a mission to, literally, find God, who has abandoned mankind.

There are a number of elements to the comic series that I will be eagerly awaiting to see how the show handles. We’ve seen boundaries pushed on television by AMC previously with Kirkman’s The Walking Dead. But, Preacher – in my opinion – makes The Walking Dead seem tame. Let’s hope they don’t shy away from tackling the darker parts of the source material too much.

Preacher is scheduled to premiere on May 22 – that’s this Sunday – and we can’t wait. Will you be tuning in? Let us know in the comments below.
