Shenmue 3 officially announced, Sony promises to back Kickstarter campaign.

Yu Suzuki took to Sony’s stage during their E3 2015 press conference to announce a partnership that would bring Shenmue 3 to PS4.

The project, which has already been successfully funded through its Kickstarter campaign, with 29 days still remaining, for those who want to chip in still and snag a backer-exclusive award. The campaign currently sits at $3.1 million (£1.9 million), having far exceeded its goal.

This was a rather big moment during Sony’s press brief and it’s understandable as to why they spent so much time on it. Though, I’m surprised they simply didn’t snag it up as an exclusive – especially when they’re backing it themselves, anyway. But, I digress.

Fans of the Shenmue series have been clamouring for a third instalment into the franchise for more than a decade, after the original release of Shenmue in 1991 and Shenmue II in 2001 on the Dreamcast.

People’s emotions were rather high, to say the least those – with real tears from those who were in attendance.

We’re told that “key members” of the original development team will be back on board for Shenmue 3, with new mechanics and battle elements from Yu Suzuki promised, offering an experience that will live up to the expectations of long-time series fans and newcomers alike.

There’s no release date for Shenmue 3 as of yet. It is currently only planned for PlayStation 4 and PC, with other platforms not being considered as of the moment.
