Avengers star Tom Hiddleston takes on the role of country western music legend in Hank Williams biopic.

Sony Pictures has released the television spot for Hank Williams biopic I Saw the Light starring Tom Hiddleston, ahead of its forthcoming theatrical release in the United States this month.

The first trailer for the film debuted last September. Barely over a minute long, the trailer showcased Hiddleston’s portrayal of famous country music singer Williams. The Avengers star – known for playing the mischievous Loki – is cast alongside Elizabeth Olsen, as Hank’s wife Audrey Williams.

It is based on the book Hank Williams: The Biography by Colin Escott, George Merritt, and William (Bill) MacEwen and has been adapted, written and directed by Marc Abraham, who rose to fame after 2008’s Flash of Genius. It was picked up by Sony last April, who will distribute it under its Sony Pictures Classics banner.

The film chronicles the rise to fame and untimely death of Hank Williams, having died at only 29, after suffering from heart failure brought on by several years of back pain and subsequent alcoholism and prescription drug abuse. In his short time, he created one of the greatest bodies of work in American music history and forever changed the face of country music.

As I have aforementioned when covering I Saw the Light, I am eagerly awaiting the release, as a fan of both Hank Williams and Hiddleston. Despite some slamming Hiddleston’s portrayal of Hank, I think he’s got it pretty spot-on, for the most part. I can’t wait to see – and hear – his rendition of some of William’s most prolific songs.

I Saw the Light is set for theatrical release in the United States on March 25, ahead of its release in the United Kingdom on May 6. Be sure to catch the video below.
