Far Cry travels to the Stone Age in Far Cry Primal, announced by Ubisoft for release in February 2016 on Xbox One and PS4.

Ubisoft has officially announced Far Cry Primal, the next chapter into the Far Cry franchise, taking the series back to the origins of mankind.

The development of Far Cry Primal is being led by Ubisoft Montréal, in collaboration with Ubisoft Toronto, Ubisoft Shanghai Studio, and Ubisoft Kiev Studio. Taking players back to 10,000 BC, it will be set during a time when mighty beasts from the woolly mammoth to the sabretooth tiger ruled the Earth.

It will follow the story of Takkar, a seasoned hunter and the last surviving member of his hunting group. Upon arriving in the majestic and savage land of Oros, he will be faced with the bitterness of reality. In a world where humans are prey and there is but one goal – to survive.

“The interesting thing about Far Cry is that it’s flexible, so when a team proposed to explore the idea of a Far Cry taking place during the Stone Age, we just said ‘let’s hear it!’  And the more we heard about it, the more we realised how much of a damn good idea it actually was,” said Dan Hay, Executive Producer, Ubisoft.

As with previous instalments into the award-winning Far Cry franchise, we are told that a “cast of memorable characters” will be featured, who will help Takkar push back and tame the dangers of the wilderness. Along the way, players will have to hunt for food, master fire, fend off fierce predators, craft weapons and tools partly from the bones of slain beasts, and face off against other tribes to conquer Oros.

“The Stone Age is the perfect setting for a Far Cry game,” said Jean-Christophe Guyot, Creative Director, Ubisoft.  “Far Cry usually puts you at the edge of the known world, in a beautiful, lawless and savage frontier.  The Stone Age is, in a way, the very first frontier for humankind; it’s the time when humans put a stick in the ground and claimed land for their own, the time when we started climbing the food chain.  That came with conflict against other humans, of course, but also against nature itself.”

Far Cry Primal is scheduled for release worldwide on February 23, 2016 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. It will release slightly later on PC in March 2016, we’re told.

Already looks visually stunning. How exactly are they going to handle the language, though? Am I to assume that it will be entirely subtitled?

That’s an interesting thought – for sure. It was one that personally crossed my mind. We’ll reach out to Ubisoft for clarification on this, and will provide an update if they can make a comment.
