God of War: Reimagining a gaming icon for a new generation

Reimagining a gaming icon for a new generation

Imagine the challenge of reimagining one of PlayStation‘s most iconic franchises of all time, with more than 20 million copies sold. If pulled off, it’d be a monumental feat. And, that’s exactly what the team at Sony’s Santa Monica studio have taken on with God of War.

After God of War: Ascension, which didn’t quite hit the high notes of God of War III, the team returned to the drawing board to reinvent a legend for an entirely new generation of consoles and gamer alike.

This isn’t the God of War you think you knew. This is a fresh start for both the series and its tortured protagonist. Now living as a man, Kratos has unshackled himself from the bonds of his past. He’s a father once again – a mentor and protector to Atreus, a son who’s determined to earn his father’s respect.

The man, once known as the Ghost of Sparta, has left his vengeance against the Gods of Olympus behind him and he’s now living in the mythical realm of Norse deities and monsters.

It is in this harsh and unforgiving world that he must fight to only survive, but also to teach his son how to be a god. Can he prevent him from repeating the Ghost of Sparta’s blood-drenched mistakes?

From everything we’ve seen, this God of War maintains the brutal combat, epic boss battles and breathtaking scale that you’d expect from the franchise and fuses them with a “powerful and moving narrative”.
